So why are there two parietal lobe peaks at the same time when there is no competition between the two kinds of alexia? It is because the two peaks are not in the same location. The area where the PCA-P3a peak is is the magnocellular occipital cortex, which is also the area that is most strongly activated in visual tasks like object recognition, where the magnocellular pathway is thought to be involved, as well as in motion perception. The area where the PCA-P3b peak is is the parvocellular occipital cortex, which is also involved in motion perception but also in the integration of visual perception, visual working memory, and spatial attention, which are all largely mediated by the parvocellular pathway. It should be noted that the occipital cortex is involved in visual processing for both parvocellular and magnocellular pathways. In summary, the two peaks do not appear to be competing for the same locations but are being activated simultaneously because the PCA-P3a peak is in an area involved in visual processing that is also very strongly activated by the visual tasks used for calculating PCA-P3b. This result suggests that the PCA-P3b peak may provide an index of the activity of the magnocellular visual pathway, which is intact in alexia, while the PCA-P3a peak may provide an index of the activity of the parvocellular visual pathway, which is not as well in alexia. This interpretation is consistent with the view that alexia is due to problems with the magnocellular visual pathway, and not the parvocellular pathway, in some of these patients.
One important caveat is that the brain imaging task used in this study does not involve a visual task, so that PCA-P3b is not exclusively based on processing visual information. This means that it cannot be determined from this study whether the magnocellular occipital cortex is also activated by non-visual processing.
The results at the peak latency of PCA-P3b (432 ms) are illustrated. The color scale is equal in all the maps, of which the strongest activations are indexed in yellow.
