He became a member of the Supreme Judicial Council (MJQ, al-Shura' al-Kebira bi al-Du'a') in 1891 when he was 71 years old and for the next three years, he would be its president.[185][186][187]
Despite Rida's relative political inexperience, he became one of the most published Muslim intellectuals of his time. He wrote books, published many essays, and produced a vast number of memoranda throughout his life.[145][146] However, his writings never attained the status of the Jurisprudential writings of his peers.[187]
After he resigned from the MJQ, he began a decades-long struggle against the Safavids and the declining Ottoman Empire.[187] At the turn of the century, he was close to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, who had known Rida personally from their student years in Salonica, and was a personal friend of Rida's brother Abdullah. He supported Atatürk when he founded the Turkish Republic in 1923, and played a major role in the Turkish National Movement.[188] In a 1928 government reshuffle, Rida became a member of Kemal's cabinet as Minister of Religious Affairs.[189] To the end of his days, he would always remain loyal to Mustafa Kemal, and would publish many works in praise of Atatürk.[190][191]
In his later years, Rida worked with many former colleagues and friends, especially Najm al-Din al-'Abbadi filho de Abu l-'Afayid, the founder of the Al-Azhar University (Mu'assasat al-Azhar) where Rida had been a student of theology and philosophy.[1][2] He also worked with a number of philosophers, including 'Abd al-Razzaq al-Bitar.[4] Rida was a popular figure at the time of the Turkish National movement, speaking before large meetings, and often addressing the National Assembly in the name of their leader Mustafa Kemal at its sittings. d2c66b5586
