The album title Rust in Peace was inspired by the 1987 film Vanishing Point, which Mustaine considers to be his favorite movie.[156] At the time, Mustaine was living in a mobile home in Palm Desert, California, and used to frequent a nearby Sonic, a fast food restaurant. Angered by Sonic's prices and attitude, Mustaine began to rant about it on the table he was sitting at. His rant attracted the attention of a customer and owner Leo, who told him that the restaurant was owned by a man named "Rust". Mustaine felt that his rant had been answered, and he was inspired to write the song "Weird Al" Yankovic's parody, "Rust in Peace".[157] The "sell out" portion of the lyrics to the track was penned by Mustaine in 1994, two years after the album's release.[158][159] Mustaine was unhappy with the delay in releasing the song, and doesn't consider it an official Megadeth song, referring to it as a "Megadeath B-side".[160][161][162]
Megadeth had problems with the use of the band's logo on record covers; in particular, Mustaine objected to another band using the M in the Megadeth logo. He implemented a new metal band logo, which was created by his friend, designer Dean Karr, and friend Will Carroll, based on the original logo.[163] Like the original black-and-white logo, the new logo is in a circle and has an interlocking M and D in it, which is also the reverse of a star.[164][165][166] None of the band's albums since the 1994 Lifesblood For the Downtrodden feature the original logo.[167] Megadeth's logo appeared on the covers of albums released by both Mustaine's band, Armageddon, and Blackstream, featuring a different cover for each release from a different band, respectively.[168] d2c66b5586
