There are, of course, hundreds of thousands of Mac users around the world that are very happy with their Macs. That isn't to say that those Macs are not useful . But the average consumer will only consider buying a Mac if it's a major upgrade to something they already have. As the Mac line has turned from a status symbol to a commodity, the average consumer has largely stopped caring.
Part of the reason the Mac was neglected for so long was that the products Apple was selling were considered commodity hardware . You could get them with Windows or Linux, or, in the case of the MacBook and Air Pro, the new Windows 10 ultrabooks. But Apple had stripped away the branding and the marketing, so the products were simply 'Mac' or 'Mac Pro' or 'Mac Book Pro'. And because Apple didn't market the Mac anymore, no one else did either.
I thought I'd be OK with my MacBook Pro, however. I'd upgraded to it from the old Mac Mini and that had been pretty good for several years until it died. I did have a dock, but it was a little on the low-end in terms of hardware. But I was very happy with the MacBook Pro. It performed so well and it was so thin and light. The MacBook Air was a little more cumbersome, but the latest iteration was just as fast and I liked its form factor. I had used a Mac Pro in the past and it was pretty good, but I never found it particularly useful. And then I started using a Windows Ultrabook and a Windows 10 2-in-1 tablet and I realized just how well my MacBook Pro could compete.
While there are a number of fairly similar companies, iDefrag has an extremely strong and unique position in the market as a utility that will defrag your Mac for you. Its library of pre-compiled scripts and programs means you don't even need to think about how to approach a task, you just tell iDefrag where to start and when to stop, and it does the rest. It is also regularly updated, with the latest release (version 4.7.7) just weeks ago. iDefrag is fairly pricey, but it is also worth every penny, and likely the best thing you can spend your money on, as it is currently the only utility that can reliably defrag your Mac.
The future of iDefrag, given the previous shake-up in its owner's affairs, is unclear. It is possible that iTunes will continue to use the iDefrag utility on macOS, though the company now has a focus on other, more traditional, areas. What is far more likely is that iDefrag will eventually disappear, as iTunes did a few years ago, as the entire Mac becomes responsible for defragging.
IDefrag wouldn't exist if it weren't for the fact that Mac users were having all sorts of problems with iDefrag. I mean, it was a solution to a problem, but it wasn't an especially valuable one.
Now, there's a few hundred users of the product, and I'm guessing that more than half of them will never bother giving up their external hard drives, and never move back to the Mac platform. So what's the point? 827ec27edc
