Look for any finish. Some bows are polished steel or chrome, but others are plated, anodized, painted, etched, or stamped. If you can decipher these markings, then you can identify the bow more easily.

Look for any warranty. Most bows have a warranty of some sort. Be careful of warranty estimates. Compound bows are not like recurve bows. A recurve bow can be wounded or broken pretty easily. If you know the exact bow you are looking for, then it makes it easier to find the warranty.

Look for any arrowheads. Depending on the bow, some bows have more than one side, and some have at least two. If you have a bow with multiple arrowheads, it is always a good idea to range test the arrows, which is the reason to have more than one in the quiver.

Example, a serial number that is read as 001 or 002 represents 1980. The number 001 may be equivalent to the 1980 model year 1. Look again for the date of production, which could be 1980.
