Franz Marc was a celebrated German painter, sculptor and printmaker (c.1880-1916) who had great influence on the art of his time. He is primarily known for his expressionist style and his depiction of opposing figures or characteristic symbols, often depicted against a background of nature; the Postimpressionists also valued his work. Marc created a wide range of artworks, from literature to architecture, and was commissioned to do paintings of Hitler and Kaiser Wilhelm II, as well as Franz Goerz, a handsome adventurer who later became Marc's lover. Marc was born in Munich and was a student of Karl Schmidt-Rottluff before going to Paris in 1889. He contributed illustrations to The Yellow Book and the college magazines for a few years before finding his expressionist style. In 1890 he met fellow German artists Kandinsky and Franz Marc, with whom he formed a triumvirate of painters known as The Munich School. In the same year he moved into a house in Pönderich and married Emilie Schmitt. In the following years, his work evolved from realism to expressionism, and Marc became increasingly interested in abstraction. In 1902, he held a large exhibition at the Société Anonyme, and in 1903 he had a solo exhibition at the Grosse Berliner Kunsthalle. After the outbreak of World War I, Marc and Martha moved to Munich, where he died. He had a son, Hans.
David Hockney (born 1938) is a Post-Modern British artist. His abstract art often addresses issues in contemporary culture. His paintings depict urban life, the interaction between humans and nature and the human capacity for imagination. He has been described as the "Oryx of Post-Modernism" and has been compared to Picasso and Matisse. Born in England, he grew up in the Midlands, where he attended St John's College, Cambridge. In 1967 he moved to London, where he was formally trained. Until 2007, Hockney's works were entirely engravings. In 2007 he began using oil paint for the first time on canvas. d2c66b5586
